Bambii: “Nitevision”

Bambii is DJ and producer Kirsten Azan, a rising star in the Toronto dance music scene who’s made a name for herself with her genre-agnostic club night JERK. One look at her setlists reveals the breath of her eclectic taste: from lush R&B classics and filtered dancehall to SoundCloud 2-step edits, nothing is off the table for a Bambii set. On “Nitevision,” Azan makes her production debut with aplomb. She turns that melting pot of influences into a throbbing, futuristic heater, where grime bass stabs intertwine with bashment rhythms.

You don’t even need the music video—full of Bambii’s friends, “the Toronto they don’t show you!”—to know what you’re meant to do when “Nitevision” comes on. In a move that speaks to her vast network and curatorial ability, Bambii recruited Pamputtae to lead on the mic. The Jamaican music mainstay’s undeniable call-and-response rallying cries—later chopped up in a NOLA bounce-style b-section—take a promising tune over the top into a twerk and wine anthem.
